57.141558, -2.858291Overview
Luxury country house hotel on the edge of Cairngorms National Park, home to a Three AA Rosettes restaurant and a complimentary Health Club.
Dining
The Library at Douneside House Tarland is home to the North East of Scotland's only Three AA Rosettes restaurant, serving a six-course tasting menu from Thursday to Saturday. The Conservatory offers relaxed dining using produce from the estate's own walled kitchen garden alongside carefully sourced Scottish ingredients. Guests can also enjoy afternoon tea with homemade scones and jam, and a selection of wines and champagnes from the bar.
Rooms & Accommodation
Within the main house of Douneside House Scotland are ten individually designed bedrooms, each with its own character and views across the house, gardens or surrounding countryside. Nine cottages and apartments are set within the grounds, offering additional space and privacy while retaining full access to the hotel's facilities. Some cottages include a kitchen and log burner, providing a self-catering option for longer stays.
Wellness & Leisure
Douneside House Aboyne offers guests complimentary use of the Health Club, which includes a heated indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room and gym. The estate also has an all-weather tennis court, a putting green, and croquet lawn. Guests can fish in the estate's water and hike directly from the hotel into the Cairngorms National Park.
Location & Grounds
Douneside House Scotland sits within 7 hectares of beautifully tended gardens and grounds, which include a walled kitchen garden, ornamental greenhouse, and arboretum. The gardens are an RHS partner garden, and gardeners offer tours of the different areas. Cairngorms National Park begins at the estate gate, with Balmoral Castle 19 km away and Tarland Golf Club within walking distance.
History & Pet Policy
Douneside House was once the family home of the MacRoberts and is today owned and operated by The MacRobert Trust, a Scottish charitable foundation that supports training for young gardeners and hospitality students. The hotel is pet-friendly: dogs are welcomed in the self-contained apartments, though not in the main house. The hotel also offers exclusive-use wedding and event packages, with access to the library and the grounds.
